What This Assessment Measures

Campus facility problems rarely begin with a major building failure. The warning signs usually show up earlier: more reactive work orders, staffing gaps that are harder to fill, inconsistent service levels, aging assets, or capital needs that keep getting pushed to another budget cycle.

Those issues don’t stay inside the facilities department. They affect operating costs, the campus experience, long-term capital needs, and the decisions leadership has to defend to trustees.

The Higher Education Facility Health Assessment gives you a structured way to step back and see where your operation stands today.

The assessment looks across five areas:

  • Custodial Operations:Staffing levels, coverage, service consistency, cleanliness standards, and your ability to maintain expectations across different types of campus spaces.
  • Maintenance Operations: Preventive versus reactive maintenance, work order performance, emergency repairs, staffing capacity, and visibility into day-to-day maintenance needs.
  • Building and Asset Condition: The condition of major building systems, aging infrastructure, deferred maintenance, and the frequency with which asset failures create unplanned costs or campus disruption.
  • Capital Planning: How current your facility condition data is, how you prioritize competing needs, and whether leadership has the information needed to make and defend long-term capital decisions.
  • Strategic Readiness: How well facilities planning connects to institutional priorities, including budgets, enrollment, the student experience, service continuity, and long-term campus needs.

How It Works

The assessment takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete. There is no cost and no login required.

  • Step 1: Tell us a little about your institution, your role, campus size, and facility footprint.
  • Step 2: Answer 20 questions covering the five areas of facility health. If you don’t have an exact answer, you can select “Not sure.” That lack of visibility can be useful information in itself.
  • Step 3: Receive your results immediately, including an overall Facility Health Score, individual scores for each section, areas of potential risk, and recommendations based on your responses.
  • Step 4: Download your Facility Health Report as a PDF you can use with your facilities team, senior leadership, or as a starting point for planning and budget conversations.
